Noise induced hearing loss is the most common type of hearing loss. There are several ways to reduce the level of noise but once the damage is done there isn’t much you can do. It’s a common misconception that you have to be exposed to a noise for an extended period of time to do damage to the ear but it may only be a single loud noise or one instance that causes the damage. The first symptom you may notice is that you are no longer able to hear high pitched sounds. As the loss progresses speech may be heard but not easily understood. This is due to the disturbance of background noise making speech incomprehensible. Tinnitus, which is a ringing in the ear due to a build up of pressure against the inner ear, may also occur.

Since it is easier to prevent noise induced hearing loss than it is to treat the condition, take the necessary precautions when exposed to loud noises. Wearing ear plugs or ear defenders while working in noisy areas is a must. Also avoid lis
